Efforts to clean up the Mbarara High Court Registry have begun to bear fruit. On Monday (March 9, 2020), the Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Bart M. Katureebe, inspected the ongoing reorganization exercise at the Court.

The Chief Justice who was accompanied by Principal Judge, Hon. Justice Dr Flavian Zeija;Supreme Court Justice and Chairperson of Case Backlog Monitoring Committee, Hon.Justice Richard Buteera; and Mbarara Senior Resident Judge, Hon. Justice Tadeo Asiimwe, was informed that the International Justice Mission (IJM) was at the forefront of streamlining court records to increase efficiency at the court.

Ms Rosette Musoke and Mr Byron Mwanje from IJM are leading a team of officials to help in the reorganization exercise.

Ms Musoke explained that court registries are the face of the Judiciary and the public interfaces with the courts through these registries.

Parties to a court case, submit information to the registry in hard copy, a physical file is created and a record is stored in the registry. The efficiency and effectiveness of storage, retrieval and access of the created files has a strong bearing on how effectively the Judiciary executes its mandate.

Last year, Mr Mwanje led a three member team to the Court to assess the data reorganization needs of the Court. Mr Mwanje explained that as IJM they would equally train registry staff and other data managers on best practices in data management.

So far, they are installing new metallic shelves as well as providing acidic boxes to facilitate hustle-free storage, access, retrieval, maintenance and archival of court records.

The Chief Justice commended the efforts of the team and thanked them for the partnership that is changing the face of the Judiciary.

The team has previously reorganized the Registries of both the Court of Appeal and the Execution and Bailiffs Division of the High Court.
